Does a Baby’s Sleep Pattern in the Womb Mean Anything?

If your baby-to-be is most active in the womb when you’re trying to sleep — or seems to be dozing when you’re awake — you may be wondering whether that pattern will persist once he’s been born. The answer is no, says OB/GYN Kyoko Peña-Robles with One Medical Group in San Francisco. “There’s no scientific evidence that indicates these patterns will stick once your baby is born,” she explains. “Newborns don't follow the day/night schedule that adults do; that’s a behavior they grow into," she adds. "And like newborns, babies in the womb sleep and wake every few hours." Therefore, you can relax and know that your little night owl’s sleep patterns will eventually adjust, usually starting around the four-to-six-week mark.
