The cop was in the area at the time

The Myrtle Beach police officer was patrolling the area around the time of the incident. The officer was approached by a witness claiming they saw Register shake a baby in a stroller, according to the incident report, news station WMBF shared.

The witness also claimed that they saw Register drop the child on the pavement after throwing the baby in the air and over his head.

The police officer said that they saw Register pick the child up off the ground and approached him.

Register admitted to the officer that he had indeed dropped the child. He then told the officer that he drops the child often to "toughen the victim up," according to the report.

The cop ordered Register to put the baby back in the stroller before arresting him. After searching him, they found a small amount of marijuana on him as well as malt liquor in the stroller.

The child was put in protective custody

After the incident, the child, who had redness on its back and a small scrape on its stomach, was taken to the hospital for further assessment.

An "involved other" was later spoken to by the police, and showed no concern for the way Register had treated the child.

Because of the lack of concern by the "involved other," and their continuing to allow Register to be in the child's presence, the South Carolina Department of Social Services went to the hospital to take the child into emergency protective custody.
