As I was searching for birthday cakes for my upcoming teen daughters’ birthdays, my sister let me in on a little secret birthday hack she has been using:
You can get ridiculously cute custom cakes and cupcakes from Walmart for only $15. I honestly didn’t believe her until I tried it myself — I ordered a custom cake for my daughters and was able to choose the frosting color, piping design, filling, and cake flavors, and even with some custom add-ons, I spent less than $20.
I was amazed that I had never realized how great Walmart’s custom cake bakery section could be. I did some digging and found some of their other ready-to-go birthday cakes that all cost less than $15.
Disclaimer: The birthday cakes may differ by location, of course, and the $15 price is for a 6-inch cake, which is designed to serve up to 12 people.

Like all the Walmart custom birthday cakes, you can customize the cake flavors of this Art Effects Cake — choose from two layers of chocolate, two layers of vanilla, or do a layer of each.
Then, select your filling: For an additional fee, there’s a choice between Bavarian cream or strawberry filling.
You can also select what kind of icing you want: buttercream or a whipped, fluffy style for no extra fee.
Stitch Cupcake Cake
Lilo and Stitch is all the rage right now, so what kid wouldn’t want a Stitch cupcake cake for their party? I love how this cupcake cake has the look of a cake, but can be pulled apart easily for individual servings.
The $15.98 price gets you 12 cupcakes, but you can also upgrade to 24 if needed.
Perfectly Princess Round Cake
This is one of the birthday cakes that absolutely blew me away, especially the fact that it only cost $15. It’s so pretty, and all the princess detailing is something that would have made my daughters so happy in their younger years.

This cake comes complete with all the beloved Bluey characters, including sisters Bluey and Bingo and their parents, Bandit and Chili.
Minecraft Round Cake
The Minecraft movie was all I heard about in my house for a while, so it’s only fitting that a Minecraft lover in yours would eat this cake right up.
I will not pretend to know anything about Minecraft, but the cake does include some cool removable figurines that the birthday kid could keep and play with long after the party is over.
Unicorn Round Cake
All of my girls went through a big unicorn phase, so we bought this Walmart custom unicorn birthday cake for several years in a row, and it’s always been a hit. I’m always so impressed by the detailing and custom touches that really make it feel like a much more expensive cake.

Last but not least, you have the somewhat hidden option (the site can make it hard to find the link, but it’s there!) to design a fully custom cake for again, less than $15! I truly couldn’t believe that it worked, but I ordered my daughter’s fully custom cake for her birthday and it was exactly what she wanted and tasted delicious.
You choose the color, flavor, icing type and color, message, and even add-on decorations like sprinkles. My daughter requested a hot pink and brown cheetah cake, and thanks to Walmart, this mom was able to deliver on a budget.
