Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for New Parents

Becoming a parent for the first time is an all-consuming experience. For at least the first year, most of us are in a daze, just trying to survive the huge shift that has occurred in our lives, and things like holiday celebrations — especially for a minor holiday like Valentine's Day — and, well… romance, tend to become less of a priority for a little while.

Perhaps more than ever though, the months after becoming a parent for the first time are the months that we could use a bit of recognition, a little bit of extra love, and a sweet, thoughtful gift. So whether you're thinking about your own partner or a friend or family member this Valentine's Day, here are some great gifts for new parents on Valentine's Day, because sexy lingerie and jewelry the baby is going to pull off in two seconds flat just won't do.

Cook Dinner

When we say cook dinner, we mean a nice dinner. No frozen foods or anything else that's prepared in the microwave or pulled from the freezer. Food often becomes functional rather than enjoyable as a new parent, so a hot, gourmet meal you didn't have to prepare yourself or find a babysitter so you could go out for is a true gift.

Full-Body Massage

Whether it's from being hunched over breastfeeding or from being up for hours in the night rocking a fussy baby, aching backs and necks are the norm for new parents. Treat them to a nice, relaxing massage, and they'll be filled with gratitude. Even better if you offer to watch the baby while they go get a massage from a professional.

Babysitting

Whether it's your spouse, your sister, your cousin, or your friend who's a new parent, the gift of a couple of hours of babysitting is priceless. The new parents can go on a date, or mom can go get a mani-pedi, or you know… take a nap. The possibilities are endless.

Breakfast in Bed

It's cliché, we know. But oh… the indulgence of it. Just don't try to make it a surprise because if you don't clue in Mom or Dad, they'll likely hop out of bed with the infant at the crack of dawn. Instead, let them know that you'll get the baby and breakfast and they should stay in bed. If it's for a breastfeeding mama, offer to bring the baby to her and take over once the baby is done nursing so she can enjoy her breakfast.

A Hot Bath

Whether you draw a bath for one or two, the gesture will be much appreciated. New parents sometimes forget to prioritize daily showers, let alone a luxurious bath. If the baby is napping or sleeping well, plan it for one of those times. If not, set up a nice hot bath and take over the baby duties, so they can enjoy in peace.

Baby Memorabilia

New parents are usually absolutely enthralled with anything that has to do with the baby. Even on Valentine's Day! So whether it's a framed piece of personalized artwork or a mug with the baby's hand or footprints on it, a gift from the baby is an adorable way to say, "We love you."

Subscription boxes have been a thing for quite some time now, and they're not going anywhere anytime soon. Pick one that is tailored to the one you love and either start them off with the first month or pay for a few months in advance. Some are even great to enjoy together, without having to leave the house or find a sitter. There are international snack subscription boxes, cooking subscription boxes, self-care subscription boxes, and even date-night-at-home boxes.

Lunch Date

If you know your partner would really enjoy a special meal out, but getting a babysitter isn't an option, plan a lunch out. It won't mess up your morning routine or cause the baby to be out past bedtime, and you can still enjoy some excellent food together. Try to time it so the baby falls asleep in the car seat or just after naptime. Just keep in mind, if your partner is the type to feel embarrassed when the baby fusses in public or is easily flustered, this may not be the best option.

Clean the House

We know that doesn't sound very sexy, but imagine getting to sit down and putting your feet up on Valentine's Day after the baby is in bed for the night. And the house is spotless and smells amazing, and you didn't have to lift a finger. Talk about relaxing! Now that's true love.

New Pajamas

And no, we're not talking about the barely-there kind. We're talking the best quality that you can afford — soft, cozy pajamas that'll make the new mom or dad in your life feel utterly pampered, because that's exactly what they need right now.

Plush Bedding

On that note, treating a new parent to some delicious, new, ultra-soft and cushy bedding is a great idea. But don't just throw it in a gift bag and hand it over. Instead, strip the milk-stained sheets, make the bed up with all of the new items, and set the scene by lighting some candles, then surprise your significant other with the new setup. You could even use a blindfold, and who knows where that will go?

Perfume or Cologne

Perfume or cologne is definitely a more traditional Valentine's Day gift, but if your significant other loves a good scent, it's one of those things that will make him or her feel human again after the baby arrives. Take your time choosing a scent that reminds you of your partner and get something really special.

Audiobook Subscription

Readers everywhere have been shocked to discover that once they become parents, there's little time left to crack open a good book during the first couple of years. A thoughtful way to remedy the problem and show your partner you're thinking about them is to gift an audiobooks subscription from a company like Audible, Scribd, or Audiobooks.com.

CBD Gummies

If your partner is struggling to find a way to manage the stress and anxiety associated with new parenthood, a gift of high-quality CBD gummies for Valentine's Day might be just the thing. There are several companies that use only the best quality CBD extracted from plants grown only in America, including Jaded, Sunday Scaries, and Equilibria.

Gourmet Coffee

Most of us wouldn't have been able to survive the early days of new parenthood without some form of caffeine. Why not make it the ultra-delicious and effective kind? Gift your love with a stock of gourment coffee, preferably from a local coffee roastery. Choose a few different varieties or flavors for fun. Just be sure there's a functioning and easy-to-use coffeemaker in the house as well.
