Sweet Tweet Bird and Birdhouse Pops

Ingredients

1 batch cake mix (any flavor)

Jolly Rancher candy chews

24 red candy coating buttons for decoration (available from craft stores)

18 ounces red candy coating (available from craft stores)

blue or pink heart sprinkles

ready-made sugar eyes or black confetti sprinkles

You can make these cute birds in any candy coating color you like; just change the heart sprinkle to a contrasting color. To make the wings for the birds, you will need the candy coating that comes in button melt form.

Directions

  1. Line a tray with parchment paper.

  2. Shape cake pop mixture into balls and pinch one end upward to make a teardrop shape. Flatten the sides.

  3. Place the shapes on the parchment-lined tray and pop into the fridge to chill.

  4. Cut the Jolly Rancher candy chews into small triangles about ΒΌ inch in length. Gently pinch them to make the shape neat.

  5. Using a knife, cut 24 candy coating buttons in half. It is easiest to use a sawing motion until you are halfway through the melt and then press down to finish the cut.

  6. Melt the candy coating. Dip the end of each stick into the melted candy and push one stick into each of the cake pop balls. The stick should be inserted in the base of the teardrop shape with the pointed end pointing slightly upward to look like the tail of a bird. Return to parchment-lined tray and pop back into fridge to chill for 10 minutes.

  7. Make the wings by using melted candy coating to stick the buttons you have cut into half onto the side of the birds. The candy button halves should be stuck on the body with a pointed tip facing up at about a 45-degree angle. Do the wings on one side of all the pops and then chill in the fridge until set. Turn all the pops over so the side that already has a wing is resting down on the tray and add the remaining cut candy buttons to the upright sides and chill for 10 minutes.

  8. Remelt the candy coating if necessary. Remove tray from fridge. Holding the end of the stick, dip a cake pop into the melted candy until the whole shape is submerged, and then lift it out of the melted candy. Holding the pop over the bowl to catch drips, gently tap the stick against your hand or the side of the bowl to remove excess candy coating.

  9. Working quickly, before the candy has a chance to set, place a heart sprinkle on the side of each bird where the wing meets the body. Place eyes on each side of the bird at the larger end of the teardrop shape (the head) and then insert the cut Jolly Rancher pieces into the front of the head to look like a beak. Place upright in Styrofoam block.

  10. Repeat for remaining pops and leave to set.
