Breast Cancer Awareness month hits home for British designer Stella McCartney as her late mother Linda Louise McCartney passed away at the age of 56 in 1988 after battling the disease for three years. In honor of her mother and women who are fighting for their lives, McCartney has designed a post double mastectomy bra named the Louise Listening bra.
Providing support, comfort and compression, the bra was created solely for those recovering from a double mastectomy. With front zips, no underwires, deep sides and wide underband, the pale blush pink bra with white lace details is as pretty as functional for the healing process, pre-breast reconstruction.
"We wanted to bring something feminine and beautiful into a bra that is taboo," McCartney told the The Telegraph. "There are so many different emotions attached to the tragic realities of having had a double mastectomy, many cultures are unaccepting and terrible things happen to women both physically and emotionally. And we just wanted to make something that allows women undergoing this to have something to be proud of, something with no shame attached. We wanted women to know that you can still be feminine, have your sensuality, have all of the things that are attached to being a woman and that part of your body can still feel beautiful on the outside, as well as the inside."
The one-of-a-kind bra, sold exclusively on her website, is available for preorder now. All proceeds will go to the Hello Beautiful Foundation, which is working towards building a center for breast cancer patients and their families in London. In addition, McCartney has designed the Alina lingerie set, from which a percentage of the profits will help the Linda McCartney Centre and the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the U.S. and Australia.
