What happens when a new mom who is used to entertaining in her home multiple times a week needs to find a space that can still host friends and family without waking their newborn daughter? Meet Sarah Boyd, LA blogger and the founder of Simply Stylist—a brand and events company that connects people and their passion for fashion—who looked to a backyard makeover to make the most of her living space. With the help of Decorist, an online interior design site that helps plan any space virtually for a flat fee, Sarah now has a space that she can entertain in without worrying about noise. Because who says you have to stop hanging out and having fun just because you had a baby?

"My life pre-baby and post-baby is very different!" says Sarah. "I went from dinners and events 3 to 4 times a week to being on lockdown every evening. While we are blessed with a great sleeper, it still leaves me stuck at the house nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., so my husband and I decided to expand our entertaining space! Our new backyard oasis does just that. Complete with an outdoor kitchen, kegerator, cornhole games and pool, we’ve got our yard filled with both fun games and friends. We keep the baby monitor outside with us and her sound machine cranked in her room so we can still enjoy our friends all while being at home," says Sarah.
Of course, finding the time to do it all on your own is another thing, so with the help of Decorist elite designer Simone Howell, they created a comfortable indoor/outdoor space that will work year-round, thanks to the southern California weather.
The most exciting part about this makeover is that the space was simply decorated and the transformation is stunning. The unsightly concrete wall is hidden behind a wall of hedges which immediately makes the space feel more private and intimate. Then, it's all about the details. Adding modern and functional lounge furniture to the grassy area between the patio and the pool helps define the two spaces without obstructing the view, while a gardening cart from Lowe's gets repurposed as a mobile bar cart, giving guests a reason to utilize an otherwise out-of-the-way space.
To personalize the space even further, Sarah used one-of a-kind glassware, coral, succulents and flowers on the bar cart and around the space.
