We never made it to a pumpkin patch this year, but we did head to a local garden center one night! The mom in me felt a little bit bad about it, like I was denying them the awesome experience of walking through a live pumpkin patch to pick out their pumpkins.
But as I watched my son run from pumpkin to pumpkin, lifting each one and climbing a few hay bales to jump off them, I noticed his smile and realized that he was having a blast. And I was having a blast watching him. When it comes down to it, that is all that matters.

Maybe we will make it to a real pumpkin patch next year, and maybe we won’t. Maybe the small garden center by our house will become a tradition, one that he will visit when he is grown and laugh at how it’s much smaller than he remembered it, that as a kid the place seemed huge and filled with so many pumpkins. Either way I realized that the memories of doing things as a family are the important things and location is secondary.
