J.Crew's Crewcuts is one of my favorite places to shop for my sons' clothing. The brand delivers classic, comfortable styles paired with fun patterns and bold colors for both boys and girls. This month, the line, which previously catered to children ages 2 to 10, is expanding to include baby clothes. Prepare for infatuation.
I sat down with the brilliant Jenny Cooper, Head of Design at Crewcuts, and mother to two adorable sons, Miller, 8, and Walker, 11. Below she shares her fashion tips, parenting strategies and something she can’t live without.
How do you attempt to strike the elusive work/life balance?
I delegate to my husband! And I don’t do emails when I’m with my kids. I can’t stand hanging out with them while they are playing video games so I don’t want them to feel the same thing.
What's your strategy for getting out the door in the morning?
Run!!! I really like snuggling on the sofa for 15 or 20 minutes before we all start rushing around so I set my alarm clock 15 minutes early to allow for it.
How has designing children's clothing influenced your own style?
That’s an interesting question! It’s probably more having boys that has influenced the way I dress. I dress more like a boy; borrow from their closet, so to speak. But then I borrowed from my father’s when I was young, so it’s a funny turnaround.
What are the items from Crewcuts that you and your sons love the most?
I am eternally grateful to the Bowery pant and the slim Stanton. Miller loves the color and I love the fit. And the Peter Mountain Works backpack—it’s so perfect for schoolbooks and lunch or for me to bring on a day expedition. We share.
What is the one article of clothing that you cannot live without?
J.Crew white linen V-neck T-shirt.
What is your favorite way to spend a day with your family?
Being a tourist, exploring a new place and sharing the exploration. They get so curious and interested!

Trendland, J.Crew and Amazon. I love Instagram—does that count?
What is your ultimate indulgence?
Macchiato and a chocolate croissant from Bien Cuit. And loafing on the sofa.
What is the best piece of advice your mother ever gave you?
Better to ask her.
What is the best lesson you have learned from your children?
Listen to what they are saying and let them make their own decisions whenever possible.
