Baby Buggy, the New York-based organization that offers assistance and resources for needy families, has tapped the 46-year-old designer to create a Victorian-inspired capsule collection and the opportunity to shop for a cause. From now through October 4th, 20 percent of sales made in store and online will benefit the non-profit's efforts to curb generational poverty.
Known for her feminine designs rendered in soft, sophisticated silhouettes with modern details, the New Zealand-born talent and mother of two girls and one boy is the perfect person for this children-focused partnership. We caught up with the design maven on Baby Buggy, family values, work-mom life balance and what fall trend she can't get enough of.
How did this partnership with Baby Buggy come about?
"We have been working with Baby Buggy for a while now and I love the organization's mission and really respect their initiatives to not only help families in need but also mentor families."
What is your goal with this collaboration?
"To help raise funds and awareness for this amazing charity."
What is the most important value emphasized in your family?
"Respecting one another."
Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind the Victorian-inspired capsule? What are some of your favorite pieces from the collection?
"The collection was inspired by my love of this era. My mum used to make all of my and my siblings' clothing growing up and she would often dress us in cotton eyelets, beautiful embroideries and pin-tucks. This has definitely influenced my designs in general, as I do find Victoriana has always been in my DNA. I love the long burnout mock neck dress; it's demure yet sexy and feminine at that the same time."
With your hectic schedule, how do you balance your professional life with your mom life? Any tips for working moms and 'having it all'?
"Well, I don't know that anyone really has it all, but I will say I work really hard at trying to create a balance between work and my family. It's a conscious effort that I work on every day ."
How do you like to spend time with your family when you're not working?
"Riding our bikes on Shelter Island or going to museums in NYC."
What are you most excited for this fall season? Any specific trends you want to try?
"I am loving the cropped boot-cut pant at the moment; it feels fresh and modern."
What would be your No. 1 piece of advice for new moms?
"Take each day as it comes and know that every mom has experienced what you are experiencing."
