A hooded bath towel is for a baby, right? When my kids were little, one of the things I loved the most was wrapping them up in a nice big fluffy baby towel that had a hood on it and getting them dry after their baths.
I remember hugging them tight to keep them warm as they dried off and just breathing in their sweet, clean baby smell. Priceless!
Well, guess what? Hooded bath towels are not just for babies any more! You can make a hooded bath towel out of a regular bath towel, a hand towel and some simple trim.
Towels today can be pretty expensive and sometimes they aren't even soft. If you make your own, you can do it for far cheaper than what is available in the stores AND you can guarantee that your kids towel's are super soft.
Here is what you need to complete this project:
- One regular size bath towel, any color
- One hand towel, same color as the bath towel, or go crazy and use another color
- Coordinating ribbon
- Coordinating thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
Here is what you need to do:
First, if your hand towel is longer than 24 inches, cut it down to 24 inches long. Mine was exactly 24 inches, so I didn't need to cut it.
Next you are going to fold your hand towel in half length-wise and cut your ribbon to the same size as the towel (length-wise).
Pin the ribbon to the towel at about 1 inch from the fold.
Next you need to open your hand towel and sew the ribbon in place on both sides of the ribbon.
Fold your hand towel in half width-wise now and make sure that the ribbon is on the inside. Sew the two short ends closed. This will leave only the long side (opposite of the fold) open.
Turn the hood right-side-out and this is what it will look like.
If your towel is like mine and you still have the binding on the bottom of both sides of the hood, cut one of the bindings off. This will make sewing the hood onto the towel easier. We have a few other steps before that, though!
While looking at the hood with the ribbon facing you, pick up the left corner at the top and tuck it inside the right top corner.
Open up the towel and shape it into a hood shape like above.
Flip the hood over, fold the end up, pin it in place and sew along the bottom to close it as is.
Fold your regular size towel in half to find the center of the towel. Pin the center of your regular-sized towel to the center of the hood.
Starting from the center, pin the rest of your hood to your towel on both sides. Sew the hood to the towel
You are done!
