For the first time ever, a Girl Scout troop camped out on the White House lawn. Who cares that that were eventually rained out, because their fireside guests were the president and the first lady.
As a part of Michelle Obama's Let's Move Outside campaign (the outdoorsy version of her Let's Move program), the GSA troop of about 50 girls was invited to pitch tents on the most famous front lawn, under the watchful eye of Secret Service agents.
Once the girls had settled in, Mr. President and Mrs. Obama joined the girls, sitting on hay bales and listing to the girls sing camping songs. USA Today reports that the president told the girls they were "pretty good" and asked if they noticed the FLOTUS "rocking out." (We believe if anyone can bring it to "Make New Friends," it's definitely Michelle Obama.)
The president praised the girls and the GSA, emphasizing the importance of being in nature, rather than sitting inside watching TV and snacking (on cookies?). Representatives of the first lady said the high-security campout fit into her mission to show creative and accessible ways to fight against childhood obesity.
The girls who participated came from GSA councils in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington and Oklahoma, USA Today reported.
Eventually thunder, lightning and heavy rains sent the first couple back inside the White House, and the troop and their chaperones found shelter in a conference room in an office building nearby.
