I can't seem to get any plants to grow aside from succulents. These beautifully shaped, water-retaining plants are the only ones I can't kill. They're easy to plant in small containers, they can survive in both drought and heat, and they practically take care of themselves. As much as I'd like to have a green thumb, I have to stick with these lovely desert plants.
The fun thing about succulents is they're easy to propagate from cuttings and leaves. I put them in smaller pots at first and watch them grow. Since I have several of these terra-cotta pots on my patio, I decided to spruce them up this spring. Just a little bit of color and fresh and modern geometric shapes to make it interesting — that was my inspiration.
CRAFT: DIY Painted Terra Cotta Pots
Supplies you'll need:

terra-cotta pots (smaller sizes makes this craft more manageable)

blue painter's tape
-
craft paintbrush

multi-surface craft paint
Step 1: Let the painter's tape guide the geometric designs. Press down firmly so the painted lines can be crisp and clean.
Step 2: Choose three of your favorite craft paint colors. I decided to stick with a blue palette and added a gold accent. Be sure to use multi-surface paint for best results.
Step 3: Once the tape is securely on the pot, brush a coat of paint inside the taped area. Depending on the color, one coat is usually all that is needed. Once it's fully dry, remove the tape carefully. Don't worry if a little bit of paint pulls up with the tape, the pot will still look great. If you don't like a slightly distressed look, just touch up the area.
Step 4: Repeat this step over the rest of the pot. To add a cool accent, add round shapes to the geometric shapes with gold craft paint. I didn't use the blue painters tape for this part; I just painted the half-circles freehand after all the other paint was dry.
Step 5: Display these uniquely painted terra-cotta pots all over your home for a do-it-yourself pop of color.
