I'm a proud fan of Frida Kahlo's artwork. I admire the way she was inspired by the mexican culture to live, dress and create.
My admiration for the artist has led me to visit the Frida Kahlo museum, also known as "La Casa Azul" ("The Blue House"), whenever I can while I'm visiting family and friends in Mexico City. The place is undoubtedly beautiful, and I like to go back to inspire myself with the vibrant colors and interesting objects. The museum is a treat.
July 6 is the day we celebrate Frida Kahlo's birthday. Considering that and remembering those vibrant colors and beautiful art pieces displayed in La Casa Azul, I came up with a creative way to honor Frida during her month.
I invite you to celebrate with me and make these pretty earrings that will be a unique accessory you can wear year-round.
DIY: Frida Kahlo Decoupage Earrings
Materials
- Basswood
- Frida Kahlo mini portraits (I printed two images 1 inch x 1 inch using normal printer paper)
- Sterling jump rings (2 pieces)
- Sterling silver ear wires (2 pieces)
- Mod Podge
- Acrylic paint
- Fine grain glitter
- 4 gold seed beads that fit on the jump rings
- Brushes
- Scissors or exacto knife
- Drill with a small bit
Instructions
- Cut two squares (1 inch x 1 inch) from the basswood sheet. You might be able to find wood square pieces that are ready to use as earrings in jewelry or craft stores.
- You will need to make a hole in one corner of the wooden square. I used a drill for this step but you can make the hole using something pointy and sharp like a skewer stick. The drill is just easier and faster.
- Add color! I painted the wooden squares using a similar color from the portrait of Frida.
- Glue the mini portraits onto the wood pieces with the Mod Podge. Allow to dry, then trim the extra corners off the paper.
- Apply a layer of Mod Podge over all the earring to protect the portraits from water and dust. Then add glitter at the corners and back of the earrings. The Mod Podge works as a sealant and it's perfect to glue and attach the glitter.
- Add the jump rings and ear wires to the wooden squares. I added two tiny gold seed beads (one on each side) as extra decoration on the jump ring.
