This adorable "Woodland" tree is just one of 24 inspiring trees decorated in "The New Christmas Tree" book by Carrie Brown. This version seems to come to life right before your very eyes. Filled with live flowers and plants such as White Madonna lillies, moss, lichen, mushrooms, ferns and more, this beauty would look just as grand in your living room as it would on your lawn. From the moss-covered stump to keeping the lilies and ferns alive (detailed below), each tree has detailed step-by-step directions on how you too can achieve the look. And even if you don't re-create it fully from top to bottom, one thing is sure, we're adding lilies to our tree this year.
Materials:
- 12 White Madonna lily stems, with open and closed flowers
- Assorted small ferns: maidenhair, Boston and beech (either purchased or foraged)
- 3- or 4-inch-long water vials or floral tubes
- Green floral wire
- Moss- or lichen-covered sticks (optional)
Directions:
- Tuck several lily stems cut on an angle or sprigs of fern into capped, water-filled vials.
- To hang, wrap a generous length of floral wire around the cap of each vial and use the wire to secure the vial to a branch. Hide the vial deep in the tree, behind one of the mossy nests or along the top of a branch; you can also camouflage the vials with clusters of moss- or lichen-covered sticks. The water vials may leak a little, so check and refill as needed.
Note: Mist the ferns daily to keep them looking fresh and happy.
