Timeless Style

The word "exotic" is often used when people describe Penelope Cruz, but the wife, mother and Oscar-winning actress is so much more. Like a young Sophia Loren, Cruz's sensual stylishness is timeless, feminine and fluid.

Red-Carpet Radiance

One of Cruz's most legendary red-carpet appearances was at the 2012 Academy Awards. That's when the Spain native came decked out in a breathtaking blue Armani Prive gown that still has folks singing her praises. "All of her appearances are inspiring," says Dmitry Sholokhov, designer and Project Runway season 10 champion. "But her Oscars 2012 look was immaculate."

Casual Elegance

There's no question that Cruz, 39, looks great in formalwear. But she also has a knack for nattily sporting casual attire. For instance, she often adds a sense of European flair by pairing skinny jeans with heels and a fitted blazer. "She loves her denim and she looks good in it," the New York-based Sholokhov says. "Once again, her sense of style never lets her down."

Not Your Typical Trench Coat

Cruz also prefers tailored trench coats. The must-have fashion staple gives her a polished look, whether she's dressed up or down. "The trench coat is always a fashion statement," says Sholokhov, who has designed a line for Lord & Taylor. "It is a functional, timeless piece. It transforms your look. Penelope knows how to wear it."

Maternity Wear With Flair

Now that Cruz is expecting a second child with her equally beautiful and talented husband, actor Javier Bardem, she's been photographed wearing more conservative attire and a lot more black. But the ensembles, while more concealing, are far from dowdy and dull. "Her looks might have toned down a little, but nothing can change her sense of style," Sholokhov says.

Another impressive aspect of Cruz's red-carpet savvy is her ability to tie everything together with just the right clutches, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Some starlets go for the less-is-more approach. Cruz deftly applies a more-is-more approach, "especially with earrings and shoes," Sholokhov says.

Flattering Colors and Fabrics

A flawless olive complexion and signature chestnut mane give Cruz the freedom to don an array of hues. Best of all, she looks just as beautiful in robin egg blue as she does in deep reds. A great example is the wine-colored Armani Prive frock she rocked at the 2013 Campari Calendar unveiling. "I love the palette Penelope chooses," Sholokhov says. "From pastels to Spanish reds—I don't recall any color mixing mistakes. Her hair color stays natural and I really hope that it will remain this way."

Although Cruz is average height—she's 5 feet 6 inches tall—she has a small waist and the curves of an Amazon. As a result, she wears cuts that accentuate her celebrated body. "She has this voluptuous but petite body," Sholokhov says. "Wearing waist-centric pieces that complement her figure in every way is the right way to go."

Steal This Style

You don't have to spend thousands on Armani to look as good as Cruz. The trick is staying true to your individual tastes and style while wearing items that flatter you, Sholokhov says. "Penelope always looks harmonious," he notes. "Her red-carpet gowns are always perfectly fitted, sleek and chic. Every woman must stay true to herself and never wear a piece that goes the opposite way from her personality."
