Rocker Chic

Masterfully melding rocker chic and haute couture, the eclectic singer, wife and mother Gwen Stefani has her own fashion line and experiments with various influences. As a result, her refreshing fashion style is always evolving, perfect for us to catch up with.
Fashion Evolution

As the lead singer and the only woman in the ska band No Doubt, Stefani fit right in because she dressed like a boy. But, with a subsequent solo career and the resulting fame and fortune, Stefani has become a lot more glamorous over the years. "She has evolved from a sexy tomboy into a woman," says Shea Riddle, a fashion stylist in Scottsdale, Ariz. "She was a guys' girl. … Now, she is a fashionista."
From Colorful to Classic

In the 1990s, when No Doubt first rose to fame, frontwoman Stefani was all about bright hues. Every time she could, she integrated the Jamaican flag colors—red, yellow and green—into her wardrobe as a salute to the band's Caribbean influences. But that has changed. These days, she's a lot more chic and subdued in her color choices. "Now when I think Gwen Stefani, I envision black and white with a splash of red," Riddle says. "Her pieces are classic with a twist."
Relaxed Mommy Style

On stage and red carpets, Stefani is a study in glamour. But when she hangs out with her two sons, she's laid-back. "Her overall appearance is more relaxed since she had kids," says Riddle, who is also a mom. "She still wears heels—which I adore and attempt to do most days," says Riddle. "But she wears more jeans and hats and even messy ponytails. She still looks effortlessly cool and, at times, overdressed for playdates at the park."
Blending Worlds

Stefani likes to bring all of her fashion preferences and influences together. Sometimes, that means wearing combat boots with chic minis and fishnets or button-up polos with cow-pattern jeans. "Gwen is stylish because she is willing to make a statement with her clothing," Riddle says. "She mixes current and trendy pieces into her everyday attire, i.e., military jackets, boyfriend jeans, leggings and even embellished matador garb."
Fun Footwear

Although Stefani looks great in a pair of roach-stomping Doc Martens, she looks just as comfortable and confident in platforms and stilettos. This kind of stylish flexibility is something Stefani perfected before she had kids, and she still executes the look today. "She helps others realize you do not have to lose yourself simply because you are a mother," Riddle says.
Accessories and More Accessories

Shoes aren't the only weapons in Stefani's fashion arsenal. She also relies on funky hats along with clunky, fun belts and bracelets. But she's not one for scarves, earrings and necklaces. For Stefani, less is more. "She combines rocker chic with a classic Old Hollywood flare," Riddle says.

Flattering the Figure

The Southern California native has the arms and abs of a 23-year-old, but she's 43. "She has learned how to be sexy, yet chic," Riddle says. Of course, this is no accident. Stefani works out, and she loves to show it with midriff-bearing shirts, tanks and sleeveless tops with bottoms like form-fitting skirts and pants. Hey, if you've got it, celebrate it.
Snag the Style

There aren't a lot of moms who embrace midriffs and combat boots. But there are some things non-Hollywood mothers can glean from Stefani's style. Have fun, revisit and update the styles that made you happy before motherhood and take advantage of the classiness that black-and-white color combinations can bring. Remember, a little bit of glamour and red lipstick go a long way.
