The breathtaking shores of Laguna Beach have become a premier vacation destination—for out-of-towners and Californians alike. Beyond its sprawling views of the Pacific's cobalt-blue waters, Laguna Beach offers a mecca of ocean activities—from surfing to whale watching.

Though Jekyll Island is seeing a burgeoning in hotel construction, there are still parts, including Driftwood Beach, where one can go to find solitude amid the lapping waves. Consistently voted one of the country's most romantic beaches, towering driftwood speckles the shores to offer more seclusion.

Alabama may not be the first state you think of in terms of beautiful beaches, but its 32 miles of white sand will pleasantly surprise you. Set along the aquamarine waters of the Gulf Coast, you can't go wrong with Gulf Shores or Orange Beach in particular, which offers plenty of relaxation, adventure or even a history lesson with nearby Fort Morgan—the guardian of Mobile Bay.

To get a glimpse of one of the most pristine coastlines in the world, Padre Island National Seashore is your spot. In addition to its 70 miles of protected coastline, the area is a safe haven for sea turtles and 380 bird species. Find your own remote stretch of beach by driving down island or arrive early to snag a camping spot.

The pinnacle of New England charm, Nantucket is home to some of the most pristine beaches as well. Sand dunes shelter the area from rough Atlantic wind and waves, making it ideal for lounging, swimming or riding bikes along the shores.
