Just in time for the upcoming school year, a barber has decided to trade his haircut services for a little read from kids. At the Back-to-School Bash in Comiskey Park in Dubuque, Iowa, Courtney Holmes from Spark Family Hair Salon gave free haircuts to boys as they read out loud to him.
"I just want to help out the kids, help out the community and make sure that the kids are able to read a book and get a nice haircut for school," Holmes told the Telegraph Herald Online. "It's awesome to listen to them read a story and them tell me about what they just read. The turnout is great. I've been talking to a lot of kids. They're happy and glad to have a good haircut going school so I feel real good about it."
The event was organized to bring the community together and help families with necessities for school. St. Mark Youth Enrichment and other partners and nonprofits donated books, bags and school supplies.
"The idea is to connect people to people and people to resources," shared Anderson Sainci, who coordinated the event. "It helps all of us to reach our full potential. It's important that all kids are prepared and ready to start the school year."
Nine-year-old Tayshawn Kirby read "Fats, Oils and Sweets" by Carol Parenzan Smalley and shared food pyramid stories and nutrition facts with Holmes.
An event that promotes reading and education, while helping kids look and feel ready for the new academic year is always good in our book.
