Step 1
Know your audience. Before you begin accessorizing, establish where you’ll be wearing your long sheath dress as this will correspond to how wild and crazy (or not) you can be. If you’re headed to cocktails with clients, take a more conservative approach. If you’re out on the town with the girls, nobody will bat an eye at your leopard-print clutch.
Step 2
Don a bold and beautiful statement piece and accessorize lightly around it. As far as statement accessories go, you should only wear one. Sure, it can be tempting to load on the jewelry, but it’s important to pick one central piece to be the show pony. Choose a chunky necklace to accentuate your neckline, a heavy set of bangles for some fun, or a bold cinch belt to split up the length of the dress. Once you’ve chosen your statement, go with light neutral jewelry, golds or silvers for the rest of your look.
Step 3
Keep it balanced and simple for an elegant look. Choose a metal (either gold or silver) and select a few subtle pieces like little drop earrings, a thin bracelet and a classy ring. The pieces should create a look as a whole and not draw attention to one element in particular. This look is perfect for the office or a more conservative event.
Step 4
Put on your face, do your 'do. Don’t be tricked into thinking “accessorizing” is jewelry-specific, ladies. You can make a huge style statement with bold makeup and hair. Try bright red or pink lipstick, which will make your sheath dress look very red-carpet, or tease your hair a bit to draw attention to your lovely face. The simplicity of your long sheath combined with stunning makeup and hair make a perfect combination.
Step 5
Pair your long sheath dress with some heels, unless your legs are miles long and then flats will do. Cute kitten-heeled pumps suffice, as do your 6-inch stilettos, but you’ll want to elongate your legs so they don’t look cut off by the length of your dress.
