A Grown Son Tells His Mom Everything We All Want to Hear in This Moving Visual Poem

I wanted to get my mother something special for Mother's Day in 2020, and I was getting married that summer, so I tapped into my friend, who's a super talented spoken word artist, to help me write a piece for her. We recorded the vocals and got permission to use the track from the producer, and we were ready to shoot in March 2020. Then the pandemic hit and we had to not only postpone my shoot, but my wedding as well.

This project has been two years in the making

Having actually experienced the Mother-Son dance last year at my wedding, I'm glad I had this extra time to give this project the additional attention it deserved.

I'm the only child to an immigrant family, so it was a big sacrifice for my mother to move to a foreign country she knew nothing about to give me a chance at a better life. My mother is happy that I'm doing well, but she still doesn't quite know exactly what it is that I do for work. Her English isn't the best, and my Chinese is even worse, so there's a language barrier between us. I wanted to use this project as an opportunity to show her how much she means to me and everything I haven't been able to express in words over the years.

So to my mom, this Mother's Day:
