Step 1
Build your maternity wardrobe around a neutral color. Black is a great choice because you can easily dress it up or down, depending on the occasion. One pair of nice black pants and a basic black skirt can be worn several times during the week with different tops and accessories.
Step 2
Change the look of your basic pieces with colorful accessories. In summer, comfortable flip flops and a bright bag give your black skirt a fashionable look. Try patterned tights and a wool scarf to accessorize your black pants in the winter.
Step 3
Show off your best features. Does pregnancy give you great cleavage? Flaunt it with some sexy and fun tops. If you have gorgeous legs, look for short skirts.
Step 4
Buy a great pair of boot-cut maternity jeans. You may find yourself almost living in them. They're seasonless, too, for the mother-to-be who needs more than one season for her maternity wardrobe.
Step 5
Try non-maternity pieces for the early part of your pregnancy. Just look for loose and flowing ones. You may even have some of these pieces in your closet. They will also come in handy for the days immediately after the baby comes.
Step 6
Choose comfort. You'll find this becomes really important as your body changes and grows. Today's maternity designers understand pregnant women want to look fashionable, too, so you'll find plenty of options that don't scrimp in the comfort department but keep you looking chic.
Step 7
Shop consignment and thrift stores for some good-looking pieces at low prices. They've probably only been worn a few times. If you need a special dressy outfit, second-hand stores are good places to check first.
