How to Quickly Remove Ink From Clothing

Treat the Stain with Detergent, Lemon Juice and Ammonia

Step 1

Mix equal parts liquid laundry detergent, clear ammonia and lemon juice in a small bowl.

Step 2

Soak the ink stain in the solution for 15 or 20 minutes.

Step 3

Remove the garment from the solution and apply a drop or two of the liquid laundry detergent directly onto the stain. Rub the stain while holding it under a stream of cold water. Continue until the stain is gone or nearly gone.

Step 4

Wash the garment according to the fabric care directions, but use cold water, not hot water. When the laundry cycle is done, check to make sure the ink stain is gone. If it is, then dry the garment as you usually would. If not, you can try using a solvent immediately.

Remove the Ink Stain with a Solvent

Step 1

Dip a clean white cloth in a solvent such as isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, spirits of turpentine or acetone.

Step 2

Dab the stain with the wet cloth until the spot disappears or becomes significantly lighter. Alternatively, soak the stain in the solvent for about 15 minutes, then blot it with a clean white cloth.

Step 3

Wash the clothing in cold water. Check to make sure the ink stain is gone, and then dry the garment as you usually would. If the stain is not yet gone, repeat the solvent treatment.
