Style Tips for Holding Up Your Hair

Choose the Right Holder

Choose ponytail holders that are made of a fabric. Fabric pony tail holders are gentler on the hair. Rubber bands tend to break the hair and pull on it. To hold the hair up, you can also use bobby pins, clips or tie a colorful ribbon around your hair.

Use Minimal Products

It's not always necessary to use gel to hold your hair in place. Gel often weighs hair down and gives hair a wet look that may be undesirable. Some gels also flake on the hair. Instead, make sure your hair is freshly washed before putting it up. Secure flyaways with bobby pins or decorative hair combs. If you need to use product to provide extra hold, keep it minimal.

Don't Be Afraid to Get Messy

Messy or slightly unkempt ponytails make a fashion statement. Don't be afraid to pile your hair up on top of your head and loosely secure it with just a few pins. Put hair up and leave some stands randomly blowing in the wind to create a soft, feminine look. For messier looks, sometimes clips or bobby pins work better than elastics, which tend to pull the hair back neat and taunt.

Use Simple Tools for Short Hair

Hold short hair up with bobby pins. Take the hair and tuck it in to make a bun on the back of your head. Secure it with bobby pins. Use bangs or hair strands tucked behind the ear to further accent the look.
