What to Know
Second Lady Usha Vance said her husband, Vice President JD Vance, eventually convinced her to expand their family to four children, though she emphasizes the decision was mutual, PEOPLE reports. The couple announced in January they are expecting a baby boy in late July 2026.
The Vances currently have three children: sons Ewan, 8, and Vivek, 6, and daughter Mirabel, 4. When the baby arrives, they will make history as the first vice presidential family to welcome a child while in office since the 1870s, the outlet noted.
In an interview with NBC News, Usha Vance, 40, addressed viral comments her husband made at a Michigan event where he recalled asking for a fourth child during the campaign. The 41-year-old vice president told the crowd his wife gave him an ultimatum: he could either become vice president or have a fourth baby.
“But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both,” he told the audience.
Usha Vance acknowledged her husband was persuasive “in a manner of speaking” but said she remained open to having more children. She explained that growing up in a two-child household influenced her initial expectations for her own family size. However, after having two children, she didn’t feel their family was complete and decided to have a third.
After her daughter’s birth, the second lady said the family felt complete. Over time, however, she became excited about the possibility of another child.
“I knew that I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I’d be happy if we had four,” she told NBC. “And so here we are.”
According to public records, the last second lady to give birth while in office was Ellen Wade Colfax, who welcomed a son with Vice President Schuyler Colfax Jr. in 1870, four weeks into his term.
