Actress Tia Mowry is facing her most challenging role yet: single mother. Less than a month after announcing her divorce, Tia opened up about the toll that her split from ex-husband Cory Hardrict has had on her and her son and daughter. It sounds like she's struggling but determined to make things work for her kids.
Tia's divorce announcement shocked her fans
On October 4, the 44-year-old shared a candid post on her Instagram about the end of her marriage. "I have always been honest with my fans, and today is no different," she began her heartbreaking message. "I wanted to share that Cory and I have decided to go our separate ways. These decisions are never easy, and not without sadness. We will maintain a friendship as we co-parent our beautiful children."
Things haven't been easy for Tia since then
While she initially said she and Cory would work together to co-parent, it sounds like things have been a bit harder to manage than Tia initially thought.
"I feel like, especially as a mom wearing so many different hats, I'm always in survival mode," she told People.
"I'm always making sure everybody is okay, everybody's alive, everybody's healthy, everybody's fed. And making sure everybody's fine, they have no holes in their socks, et cetera."
Being a single mom has changed Tia's perspective about living in the now
It's become especially important to Tia to practice self-care these days. "But for me, it's about learning how to be aware and present with myself, and tapping in and making sure I, too, am taken care of," she explained. "[Because] how can you take care of other people if your cup isn't filled?"
With Tia's busy schedule, it has to be hard to do it all
Tia is not only juggling joint custody of her children — 11-year-old Cree and 4-year-old Cairo — but she's also busy working. One of the reasons Tia was talking to People is because she has a new partnership with Lactaid. And you can see just how busy the mother of two has been lately by checking out her Instagram, which is full of sponsored posts. Girl is hustling!
Despite the challenges, Tia and her kids are doing well
Tia said Cree and Cairo are rolling with the punches with the divorce and are adapting well so far. "I'm in awe of my children, especially my son right now," she shared. "I told him the other day, 'I'm so proud of you,' that he's learning at such a young age that sometimes life will give you challenges, but that doesn't mean that you give up, that doesn't mean that you don't believe in yourself."
Hopefully both of Tia's kids continue to thrive in their new normal. Given Tia and Cory's commitment to peaceful co-parenting, we're sure they'll be just fine!
