What to Know
In recent years, the conversation about child stars and what they’ve been exposed to has become far more serious. Due to the nature of their work, child stars often find themselves in very adult situations. Especially because they’re often surrounded by adults. While some make it through relatively unscathed, you never know what they leave the experience with. A quote from former Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner has recently resurfaced about how the show’s subject matter opened her eyes as a young teen. And it has some people very concerned about what child stars are getting exposed to.
Sophie Turner was unprepared for what she was going to learn during her time on GoT.
Turner was cast on Game of Thrones in 2009, according to reports. The actress, who was born in 1996, was 13 at the time of her casting. The show began filming in 2010, making her around 14.
X account Movie Scenes shared a quote from the actress about the alleged “sex education” she got as a teen while starring on the popular show.
“The first time I ever found out about oral sex was from reading the script. I was 13. I was like … Wow! People do that? That’s fascinating!” she said.
Sophie Turner says Game of Thrones was like a “S*x education” to her when she was only 13.

People had genuine concerns about the treatment of child actors.
“She was so young and the show was intense from day one. It’s wild Hollywood still puts minors in those situations without better safeguards. Glad she’s open about it now, but it highlights why child actor protections need to be way stricter,” one person wrote.
Another person added, “It raises interesting questions about how productions support young actors navigating adult themes.”
“This is what starting a adult career from a very young age can expose teens to, reasons why not all come out same and free from abuse, glad she took it as a learning process,” another commenter wrote.
Others were horrified that teen actors would be subjected to such things.
Their comments showed that while Sophie Turner may have made light of the situation, it might have been the safest situation to be in.
“No, Sophie, that isn’t fascinating, it’s rather disturbing that the adults in the room will allow a 13 year old child to be exposed to such x rated 18+ scripts,” someone commented.
“A 13-year-old being introduced to explicit sexual content through a professional script meant for adults raises serious questions about how young actors are protected on major productions. No minor should have to navigate mature material like that without strong safeguards and guidance in place,” another person replied.
A commenter wrote, “When minors work in adult-themed productions, there should be serious guidance, education, and boundaries in place. Fame doesn’t cancel childhood.”
Her parents were allegedly too late for the sex talk.
During an appearance on the talk show Conan, Sophie Turner told host Conan O’Brien that by the time her parents were ready to talk, she was already pretty well informed.
“I mean, my parents sat me down when I was, like, 15, and they were like, ‘Think it’s time to talk about the birds and the bees!’” she said. “And I was like, ‘I’m on Game of Thrones! I know everything there is to know and more. Like, I don’t think I need any education there. I got all sussed out.’”
