When it came time to start a family, singer Pink says she faced a lot of pushback from music industry types. But despite the resistance she faced, she was determined to have kids, knowing it would be a healthy way to deal with her own past and childhood struggles.
The hit maker chatted with Zane Lowe for Apple Music
People caught a preview of Pink's yet-to-be-aired interview, in which the 43-year-old mom of two got candid about how her difficult childhood motivated her decision to have children, even when many in her professional life cautioned her against becoming a mother.
Many warned Pink that taking time off to give birth would be a career-destroying move
"Everyone told me, 'If you have children right now, your career's over,'" she recalled.
According to the pop star, many people underestimated her and didn't think there was any more substance to her than what she shared publicly with her music.
But Pink forged ahead with her plans and welcomed two children, 6-year-old son Jameson and 11-year-old daughter Willow, with her husband, Carey Hart.
There was no way Pink was about to let anyone tell her what she could do with her life
"Obviously, we're all much more complex than any of that, but when I had a child, I think it softened me to the world, the part that didn't understand me," she explained.
"And I think that's when my career began, really. I mean, I did a lot of stuff before that, but really, truly, I think it's when I started to really understand myself and understand the world and my place in it."
Pink has been very open about her rough childhood
While many people may have been nervous about having children after being brought up the way Pink was, the singer saw motherhood more as a chance to fill a void in her life.
"Having a family was really important to me because my family life was screwed as a kid, and I'm super affectionate and cuddly and goofy. Just doing music wasn't enough for me," she continued. "I was lonely. I was so lonely. It's a very lonely business."
While Pink loves her career as a musician, it's her family life that really fills her cup
"I love writing songs. I love singing songs. I love performing," she explained, before adding that cuddling her kids and taking them camping is one of the coolest things she'll ever do.
We love that Pink is such a loving and devoted mom, and we're glad she didn't listen to the naysayers and instead followed her dreams.
