On Sunday, families across the UK celebrated Mother's Day. For King Charles, it was likely an emotional day, as it was the first time he's had to mark the holiday without his own mom, Queen Elizabeth, by his side. But it was clear from his touching Twitter post that the beloved monarch, who died in September 2022 at the age of 96, was in his thoughts.
Charles shared two throwback photos to mark the holiday
In an official tweet in honor of Mother's Day, he included an image of a young Queen Elizabeth in her most treasured role — as mom — lovingly holding a rosy-cheeked Charles on her knee. Alongside it, he also shared a photo of his wife, Camilla, with her late mother, Rosalind Shand.
In his message, Charles referenced the mothers who are no longer here

In a subtle nod to his mom, he wrote, "To all mothers everywhere, and to those who may be missing their mums today, we are thinking of you and wishing you a special day."
Elizabeth left behind four children, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren (and counting), so we know there were many loved ones keeping her in their hearts on Sunday.
The Prince and Princess of Wales also shared a special Mother's Day message
In honor of the holiday, Prince William and Kate Middleton treated their fans to two new adorable images of their children. The first features mom Kate perched in a tree, surrounded by Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The second shows Kate holding Louis in her arms. The photos were captured by photographer Matt Porteous on the family's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England.
The Waleses' message read simply, "Happy Mother's Day from our family to yours."
The royals are preparing for a momentous occasion this spring

Charles' coronation weekend is set to kick off on May 6. During the ceremony, which will be held at London's Westminster Abbey, he will be crowned, formalizing his role as monarch and the head of the Church of England and marking the transfer of titles and powers. New reports indicate that 15 members of the royal family will participate in the procession ahead of the service, including all three of the Waleses' children.
A star-studded concert will be held the day after the coronation.
Though the details have yet to be announced, the lineup of performers will feature some of music's biggest stars. Fans will have a chance to see it all go down live if they can snag one of the 10,000 tickets up for grabs. The night also will include "Lighting up the Nation," a laser, drone, and projection display at iconic locations across the UK. It all sounds like quite an incredible way for Charles to start his long-awaited reign as king.
