Influencer Known for Her Viral $47 Wedding Dress Died After Complications During Childbirth

Content creator Kiara Brokenbrough, who went viral for wearing a $47 Shein dress for her wedding, passed away on March 30 due to complications during the birth of her first child. She was 32.

In a Facebook post dated April 13, her husband Joel Brokenbrough wrote, “My beautiful, God-fearing, worshipping wife, has gone home to be in the presence of the Lord.”

The couple’s newborn son, Jonah, survived the delivery and remains in a neonatal intensive care unit where he is reportedly showing signs of remarkable improvement, People reported.

“In the midst of this profound loss, our son, Jonah, entered the world in a truly miraculous way. He is currently in the NICU, fighting each day, and we are grateful to share that he is making progress,” Joel Brokenbrough posted on Facebook.

Medical officials have not released a specific cause of death due to state privacy laws, but the tragedy has sparked significant online discussion regarding higher maternal health risks faced by Black women in the United States, according to People.

Shaneka Greene, who is the mother of Joel Brokenbrough, created a GoFundMe page to help the family, with a $150,000 fundraising goal. As of Tuesday, the fundraiser has received a little over $125,000, according to the GoFundMe page.

In a statement on the fundraiser page, Greene explained that, “Joel and his wife Kiara Brokenbrough were married four years ago and were expecting their first child in June. … They were in the process of moving from West Virginia back to California to make a new home for their growing family.”

Brokenbrough initially reached millions of viewers in February 2022 after sharing details of her minimal $500 wedding that featured an under $50 white backless dress and a free ceremony location at a public park to encourage others to avoid marriage-related debt, E! News reported.

A user commented on X, “That’s heartbreaking, she built a life rooted in simplicity and intention, not debt. A joyful moment turning into loss like that really puts things in perspective. And it’s a painful reminder that the crisis around Black maternal health is still very real.”

Anthony O’Neal, a financial author and speaker, posted on Instagram, “My lil sis, Kiara Brokenbrough was more than the bride who showed the world you don’t need a fortune to build a beautiful life. She was a friend. She sat at my table. She shared her heart, her faith, and her story with our community.”

“Now she’s gone—too soon, too young, leaving behind a husband and a newborn son who will grow up hearing about the love his mother poured out to bring him here. There are no easy words for this kind of loss. Only prayer. Only presence. Only action,“ O’Neal posted on Instagram.

Relatives stated the family’s shared focus remains on Jonah’s continued recovery in hospital care and assisting the new father as he navigates the sudden transition to raising a child alone, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported.
