If there’s one thing we love about following along with the royal family, it’s watching Kate Middleton and Prince William’s kids grow up. At first, they became parents to Prince George, which was so exciting, and since then, they’ve also added Charlotte and Louis to their crew. This adorable family of five is too sweet, and every time Kate shares any kind of update on what her kids are like these days, we soak it all up. Kids change so fast!
Sometimes, Kate offers updates on her kids while visiting events or giving speeches, and sometimes, it’s in the form of beautiful portraits she’s taken of them while hanging out at home or celebrating their birthdays. No matter how she shares it, we always love keeping up with Kate’s kiddos.
Here are some of the best updates that Kate has shared about her kids. Stories, photos, little tidbits here and there about their personalities … we’ll take it all!
Princess Charlotte Is In Charge

Knowing Charlotte (and her sass), we had a feeling she had a big personality, and this is something Kate shared while chatting with the wife of Royal Marine commando Chris Burge at a 2017 event: Charlotte likes to be in control.
"She said that Charlotte is growing up really fast. She is the one in charge," Samantha Burge said.
Charlotte loves to dance

Much like her late grandmother, Princess Diana, it seems that Charlotte loves to dance. At a 2017 royal meeting, Kate told attendees that Charlotte has started taking dance lessons and that she “absolutely loves it.” It’s been a couple of years since this update, so we need to know if Charlotte is still just as in love with dance these days. Hopefully so!
Her kids love cheesy pasta

Honestly, doesn’t this apply to all kids?! When Kate visited the Lavender Primary School, she talked about her children’s food preferences. And not only does Charlotte love olives (surprising for a kid her age) but all of the kids are huge fans of cheesy pasta.
“They made cheesy pasta the other day. One stirs the flour, one puts the milk and butter in. And they make salads and stuff,” Ivy Learning Trust chief Matthew Kleiner-Mann told a reporter at the event.
These photos from the Chelsea Flower Show
Every now and then, the royal family will share an update that includes some of their personal family photos, and this one from last spring was one of those times. Not only could we not believe how big Prince Louis was getting already, but isn’t this family the cutest, all playing in the garden together? Hopefully, more photos are coming this year, too.
Louis adores playing in the garden

Speaking of playing in the garden — apparently, that happens to be one of Prince Louis’ favorite pastimes. At the Chelsea Flower Show, Kate spoke with fellow mom Sarah Griffiths, and they talked about what her youngest son loves to do outside.
"She was just saying that her little boy Louis loves to smell flowers and he enjoys being out in the garden," Sarah said.
Charlotte loves spicy food

We already knew that Charlotte loves olives, but apparently, her grown-up tastes don’t end there. As Kate said during a visit to Pakistan, she loves to cook curry, but Charlotte’s the only one who can handle the spice.
"It's so hard cooking curry with the family though. The children have a portion with no spice, [William's] is medium, and I quite like it hot. Charlotte is pretty good with heat,” Kate said.
George and Charlotte both love photography

We’re always totally blown away by the beautiful photos that Kate takes, especially of her children, and now it sounds like her kiddos are taking after her in that way. While at an event last summer, Kate talked to teens interested in pursuing photography and shared that George and Charlotte love taking pictures, too.
"Just look at everything around you. Maybe it's in front of you, or far away, but choose your subject and focus on it,” she said at the time. “Get outside with your camera as well. George and Charlotte love it when we do that."
Prince Louis is adventurous

Every photo we’ve seen of Louis so far seems to indicate that he has quite a sense of adventure, and according to what Kate said at an event in 2019, Louis has been “keeping us on our toes,” especially on the playground.
"I turned around the other day and he was at the top of the slide — I had no idea!" she said.
This sweet family portrait
In December 2018, the family shared this portrait on Instagram — the photo that also served as the one on their Christmas card that year. It was the family’s first holiday season with Prince Louis, and ended up being one of the first pictures we saw of Will and Kate and all three of their children at the same time. Such a beautiful family!
A family Christmas photo
A year later, the Kensington Palace Instagram account shared another family Christmas photo — and this time, it was Kate who was behind the lens, taking the picture. How cute is Will with his three little ones? Louis, George, and Charlotte have been growing so fast, and it’s so much fun to see all of them together at the same time like this.
A school update
Now that Charlotte is 4 and George is 6, this brother-and-sister duo are able to share all kinds of new experiences together, including going to school (and wearing these adorable uniforms). This pic was taken in September 2019, before George and Charlotte headed off for a day at school at Thomas’ Battersea. They look so happy!
They love beets

Here’s even more proof that Kate’s kids are pretty adventurous eaters. In January 2020, she paid a visit to the LEYF Early Years Chef Academy, and when she heard that it’s hard to get the kids at the school to eat beets, Kate said her kids love them. "Mine absolutely love it — it's one of those things, until you try it, you don't know,” she said.
George’s birthday portrait
These birthday portraits (usually taken by Kate herself) are something we always look forward to every year as Charlotte, George, and Louis grow older, and this one of George is super cute. Shared in honor of George’s 6th birthday in 2019, he’s grinning away as he poses in the garden at home at Kensington Palace. He looks like a big kid here!
Her kids can be a challenge

When Kate’s giving updates on her kids, she’s never been afraid to keep it real. And in a speech she gave in 2017, she admitted that motherhood can be a challenge.
“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience. However, at times it has also been a huge challenge,” Kate said in her speech. “Even for me, who has support at home that most mothers do not. Nothing can really prepare you for the sheer, overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother. It’s full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry, all mixed together.”
Charlotte’s 4th birthday
Another adorable birthday portrait, and this time, it’s Charlotte’s turn to shine. The Kensington Palace Instagram account shared this picture of Charlotte back in May when she turned 4, and we love how prim and proper she looks in this little pose. And, as always, she’s perfectly dressed in her cute sundress and little matching sneaks.
Louis is growing up so fast

During a January 2020 appearance, Kate talked about Louis gaining a little bit of independence.
"Kate said Louis had started to tell her 'Mummy, I'm balancing' and she said it was really nice to see him turning into a little boy from being a baby,” she told one woman at the event, according to Hello Magazine (via The Hits). “She's obviously very proud of her children."
Prince Louis’ birthday, of course
Being that Louis is only 1 year old, of course he hasn’t had the pleasure of appearing in many birthday Instagram posts just yet. Last year, he finally got his first birthday portrait — and of course, it was as cute as could be. Not only is his little pants and sweater outfit totally to die for, but we can’t get enough of that huge smile (and his bottom teeth coming in!).
Louis loves to go everywhere with Kate

Looks like we might have a mama’s boy on our hands! At an event in December, one little boy just couldn’t get enough of Kate, and she said he reminded her of Louis, who’s always stuck to his mom like glue.
"You remind me of my little Louis, he keeps saying, ‘Me, me, me,’" Kate told the little boy. "And he wants to come everywhere with me!”
She can’t believe how fast they’re growing

And being that we’ve been following along with George, Louis, and Charlotte since their birth, we definitely agree that they’ve been growing up way too fast! Back in December, Kate chatted with someone at an event about how fast George in particular has been getting older.
“She said children grow up so quickly and she can’t believe that George is 6 already,” the woman said.
Louis’ christening
One of the earliest photos we got to see of Prince Louis (besides the traditional ones taken outside of the Lindo Wing following his birth, of course), were the snaps the palace shared of his christening. Not only does Louis look so cute here, but we love how happy Kate is to hold him, too. This mother and son make such a sweet pair and always have.
