Being a mom can feel very isolating at times, so it helps to see that a lot of moms are going through everything we are — especially when those moms are celebrities. And model Chrissy Teigen is so open with her life on social media, that it sort of feels like she's our real life mom friend. Why, yes, our kids also bother us in the bathroom, have tantrums, and play silly and adorable games just like Chrissy's kids do. We're basically the same … ‘ish.
Chrissy's a mom of two, raising her 4-year-old daughter, Luna, and her almost 2-year-old son, Miles. For the past four years, she's shared the good, the bad, and the ugly of being a parent — which has often opened her up to a lot of mom-shaming online. But she won't let that stop her from being honest about motherhood, and the rest of us are so grateful to have her as our pseudo mom friend, even if our friendship is just via following her online. Here are 20 times she just got us.
No social distancing from kids
These last few weeks have been rough for all of us, and no one knows a lack of social distancing better than moms. Our kids pretty much never leave us alone when they're this age. Chrissy documented how attached Luna can be with this photo of her daughter playing under mom's dress while she worked.
Too real.
Enduring bathroom privacy fails
Speaking of kids being attached to mom all the time — like most parents, Chrissy doesn't even get to pee in peace. Bathroom privacy becomes a thing of the past when kids come along. Here, she joked, "I was just forced to play badminton while sitting on the toilet, peeing. Kids are fun."
Being extra for the sake of keeping the kiddos happy
Chrissy knows better than anyone what a mom will do for her kids. Once, she even dressed up as Princess Jasmine to watch Aladdin with Luna. It was December, so nowhere near Halloween. She just wanted her daughter to have an extra special movie night. So, next time we do something a little wacky for our kids, just know that Chrissy does, too.
Fed up with kids music
We probably should have enjoyed our pre-kids playlists a little more, because sometimes it feels like all we listen to these days is music made for specifically for children. Chrissy put it best when she tweeted, "I can't tell the difference between kidz bop and the real songs. My brain is dead." We feel that so much, girl.
Shopping like we do
"Spent 3 hours in Target yesterday," Chrissy captioned this photo of Luna eating crackers in a Target cart. The model's basket is filled with all kinds of goodies from Halloween-themed cheese puffs to ice cream Drumsticks. Few of us have ever taken a brief trip to Target, so it's nice to know we're not alone in heading in for "just one thing" and coming out with a cartload of goodies.
Relying on community when the kiddos are turds
Having a group of mom friends is so helpful when dealing with the tough days. And while Chrissy's community is a bit bigger than ours (she has almost 13 million Twitter followers), she relies on other moms sharing their experiences just like we do. On this particular day, she was just hoping that her kids aren't the only ones who can be mean to their parents on occasion. We've definitely been there.
Less-than-glam family photos
Chrissy's caption on this family photo is so real. "Luna. Luna please. Luna one smile. Please for mama," she wrote. "Okay that's fine you don’t have to. Don’t listen to people that tell you to smile. But please can you smile. No it's ok nevermind. Maybe one smile?” Family pics with a toddler can be such a struggle. We're so glad that a celeb can tell it how it really is.
Understanding the struggle with mealtime
Luna brought her stuffed llama Ruby to the lunch table and proceeded to feed her the meal that Chrissy made for her daughter and not her daughter's toy. But Chrissy took it all in stride and just documented the cute moment. Sure, we don't always want our kids to play with their food, but sometimes, life happens, and we just have to take a photo.
Parenting traditions? What parenting traditions?
There are so many traditions that parents are supposed to take part in. Santa Claus, Elf on the Shelf, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, etc. Ahead of last easter, Chrissy posted an urgent tweet asking for recommendations about how she was even supposed to explain the Easter Bunny:
"Wait what is the Easter story for kids? Why do we hide the eggs? To lure the bunny? Does the bunny hide the eggs? Do you put something else out to lure the bunny to hide the eggs? Who do kids think hide them? I’m so confused please hurry."
Coming clean about postpartum life
"No one told me I would be coming home in diapers too," she tweeted after giving birth to her daughter, Luna. Few people talk about the realities of postpartum life, and we're just happy that someone with such a big platform does. We're all in this messy mom life together, even the celebs — diapers and all.
Needing a moment
One time, a news outlet wrote that Chrissy locked herself "in a room to get some 'peace' from her crying children while on a family vacation with John Legend." Chrissy's reponse? She tweeted the article and wrote, "Hell yeah." All moms need a break, and more power to Chrissy for taking the time she needed.
We get it, girl.
Brushing off accidents
No parent can protect their kids 100%, so we just have to get really good at making our kids feel like they're okay even after an accident. "Favorite parenting words: 'you’re okay you’re okay,'" Chrissy Teigen captioned this photo of her child after a spill. Not freaking out over a minor accident usually helps the kid bounce up like nothing happened, and Chrissy gets that.
Losing the uphill battle of putting a sleepy kid to bed
Naptime and bedtime are two of the biggest parenting struggles, which makes no sense on paper. As Chrissy explained it, "Why it is so hard to put someone who is already sleepy to sleep?" Why, indeed. We know that our kids are tired, but then they sometimes also refuse to sleep which just makes them more tired! Even celebrity kids are like this, apparently.
But also not wanting them to sleep
Being a parent is just constantly being in all kinds of conundrums. One relatable one that Chrissy has is wanting her kids to be awake when they're sleeping but also sleeping when they're awake. There's no winning here. The second we put them to bed, we miss them. It's just what happens to us moms, Chrissy included.
Smiling through the pain
Luna and Miles are in some kind of argument here, and all mom wanted was a nice family photo. So, Chrissy decided just to give a big smile even if her kids wouldn't. Hopefully, she can look back on it and laugh one day — and also know that random child meltdowns happen, even to the best of us.
Having a laugh about the struggles of breastfeeding
A few months after giving birth to Luna, Chrissy went to Disneyland. But when she went on Splash Mountain, she found herself needing to protect her daughter's source of food during the big drop. "MY MILK," she captioned the funny photo of her clutching her chest. Trust Chrissy to turn an awkward moment into a hilarious one.
Playing along
And when it was time to breastfeed Miles, Luna had some fun with that. She asked her mom to also feed her babydoll, which Chrissy obliged. She's the kind of mom who would always rather play along with the fun moment than worry about negativity or judgment. This is such a cute memory for Luna and Chrissy to have together.
Playing the kid card
Look, being a mom means that sometimes we get to play the kid card to get something for ourselves like a meal off the kids' menu or a cool kids' toy for Christmas. Children are built in excuses to have a little fun like that. Chrissy gets that, and one year for Christmas she bought newborn Luna a Hatchimals toy. "We are all pretending this is for Luna," Chrissy joked while excitedly holding the toy.
Poking fun of herself
In an attempt to have fun with the kids, Chrissy went down a bouncy slide and, well, she had a little bit of a wardrobe malfunction. She was able to cover it up before anything was seen, but her face in the video as she realizes what's happening is so funny. Happens to the best of us.
Bathtime patience
Welp, been there. Bath time may have been relaxing once upon a time. But when kids come along, it loses some of its appeal. Suddenly, there's a toddler shoving bubbles in mom's face. But Chrissy seemed to be having fun with it. Her kids are always having a good time with her, and she enjoys the good, bad, and ugly right along with them. Takes a lot of patience!
