Many already know that birth plans are incredibly personal for moms-to-be, but these 20 celebrities shared that they had doulas when they gave birth, helping to destigmatize alternative birth options. In recent years, the doula craze has really caught on, but some celebs have been using these birth partners for much longer than the trend has existed.
Doulas are there to emotionally support the laboring mom, help her feel more comfortable, and advocate for her to the doctors and nurses if the birth is taking place in a hospital. Aside from cost, there are basically no downsides to having a doula present during labor. And since money is no object for these A-listers, they opted to have a doula at their side. And most of them raved about the experience afterward. Here are 20 doula stories from the celeb moms themselves.
Teyana Taylor
Singer Teyana Taylor recently revealed that fellow songstress Erykah Badu is going to help Teyana deliver her second baby. "I'm considering home birth, and I'm actually going to be doing it with Erykah," Teyana said, adding that she was "super excited." Last time Teyana gave birth, she accidentally did so in her bathroom. Here's hoping her birth plan goes according to plan this time.
Slick Woods
Erykah was also Slick Woods' doula in 2018, when the model gave birth to her son. "She's a mommy role model. A mother I look up to," Slick Woods told People magazine about Erykah. The singer has been in the doula business since 2011, and as of 2019, had delivered 40 babies.
Bekah Martinez
The Bachelor star recently gave birth to her second child and raved about having a doula on her Instagram Stories. "Having even just a few hours of help so you can relax postpartum makes a HUGE difference," Bekah said, encouraging moms-to-be to put doula expenses on their registry. "It'll be way more valuable than any fancy stroller or bassinet, I promise you."
LeToya Luckett
The singer was one celeb who wasn't sure she wanted a doula. "At first I thought it was just a trendy L.A. thing," she told Essence before eventually reconsidering. "I knew I was strong enough to do this on my own, but thought I would love to be guided through this process and make it even more beautiful than it already is," she added.
Kelly Rowland
LeToya's fellow Destiny's Child band member Kelly Rowland is the one who recommended a doula to LeToya in the first place. Kelly used famed doula-to-the-stars Lori Bregman for her own son's birth. In a testimonial for Lori's site, Kelly wrote, "I feel so blessed to have had her loving support throughout my entire pregnancy and birth. … She made me feel SO relaxed and READY for birth, she dismissed all FEAR and gave me FOCUS a focus of LOVE! She is still my friend to this day!"
Kate Hudson
Actress Kate Hudson is another of Lori Bregman's clients. "I've known Lori Bregman for 20 years. She has always been a good friend and helped support me through all of my pregnancies," Kate wrote for the doula's website. "It was beautiful to have her support for my pregnancy and birth. We were grateful to have such a nurturing and knowledgeable friend in the room with us on the big day."
DJ Khaled's wife
Nicole Tuck used a different famous celeb doula for son Asahd Khaled's birth in 2016. Per BET, Latham Thomas, founder of doula and maternity lifestyle brand Mama Glow, helped Nicole throughout her pregnancy and up through birth. "It was a pleasure and honor to support Nicole and Khaled, and it's amazing to be on the other side and visit with Asahd, who just celebrated his first birthday," Latham said to BET in 2017.
Tamera Mowry-Housley
Tamera dedicated an entire episode of her show Tia & Tamera to her birth plan. It was called "Doula Right Thing." Tamera also used doula Latham Thomas. Basically, celebs have two doula options: Latham Thomas or Lori Bregman. Sure, some have used others, but those are the most high-profile doulas for the stars.
Kelly Ripa
People magazine reported that the morning show host used a doula with her second child, daughter Lola Grace. "We did breathing exercises, we focused on things, we focused on getting Mark out of the room," she joked about her husband, Mark Consuelos. "I said to Mark, 'I don't want you seeing any of that, it might change your whole vision of me.'"
January Jones
Mad Men star January Jones has been open about her son Xander Dane Jones' pregnancy. Well, the actress has refused to reveal who her baby's father is, because she wants to keep that private. But everything else has been on the table – like the fact that she used a doula. "I have a great doula who makes sure I’m eating well, with vitamins and teas, and with placenta capsulation," she said shortly after giving birth.
Jessica Biel
Jessica and her husband, Justin Timberlake, planned to have a very natural birth for their son, Silas, but things went awry. "Our birth plan was anything but normal. We had two midwives, one doula, one meditation birthing class, [and] a ton of hippie baby books," Jessica has said about her original idea. "When all our plans fell apart, and the serene, natural childbirth we had envisioned ended with a transfer to the hospital and an emergency C-section, we arrived home exhausted, disillusioned, and totally in shock."
Not every mom who wants to use a doula has things go their way, but at least baby and mama ended up OK.
Alicia Keys
Latham Thomas was Alicia Keys' doula as well, and Alicia adored her experience. "It wasn't until I was pregnant that I became overly conscious of how much I only wanted to have positive things around me; people, food, and energy!” she revealed. “I also saw how easy it is to think of birth as a series of decisions that someone else is making for us. But we [women] are powerful and almighty, and Mama Glow [Latham Thomas] helps show us just how empowered we can be all the way throughout this glorious time in our lives."
Alyson Hannigan
The How I Met Your Mother star used a doula for her first child. When asked about her birth plan for her second child, she stated that she wanted that same experience. "I am absolutely terrified of hospitals, so I think that the home is the best place for me to feel comfortable. I had a midwife, her assistant, and a doula. It will be the same again this time," Alyson said.
Kristen Bell
For the birth of Kristen's second child, Delta, she turned to doula Lori Bregman for help. She loved the experience so much that she plugged Lori's book The Mindful Mom-To-Be for other expectant mothers. "'Lori] is an AMAZING doula," Kristen tweeted in 2015. "She helped [me] have my 2nd. Her book #MindfulMomToBe is a must have 4 moms to be."
Heidi Klum
Another Lori fan is model Heidi Klum, who has four kids. Heidi wrote a rave review for the doula's testimonials page. "Lori Bregman is fantastic and her massages are extraordinary. She leaves me feeling totally relaxed and pampered," the model said. High praise, indeed.
Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway, who has been public about her struggles to conceive, also turned to doula Lori Bregman when it was time to give birth. "Lori is a pregnancy and birth goddess! We all need support and Lori Bregman has enough support for the whole village," Anne wrote for her testimonials page. Anne now has two sons.
Lisa Loeb
In an interview with_ People_ magazine, singer Lisa Loeb revealed that she used a doula for the birth of her son, Emet. "My doula, who's one of my best friends, came over to the house at 3 a.m. to confirm I was indeed going into labor and we caravanned to the hospital," Lisa remembered, adding that she also brought a banana layer cake to the hospital with her for all the nurses to enjoy.
Talk about going above and beyond!
Alanis Morissette
Another singer who used a doula is Alanis Morissette for the birth of her daughter, Onyx. She didn't quite have the same glowing experience as everyone else. She told SELF that her doula told her "get on top of the wave!" during labor, and Alanis shouted back, "HOW DO I? How the f*** do I do it?" In the end, Alanis said she felt like her own doula as things progressed. "I felt I was the coach," she said. "[I said to myself], 'She's coming, you don't have to manipulate anything, the next contraction she's coming out, I guarantee it.'"
Nicole Kidman
Actress Nicole Kidman opened up to Oprah about having a doula way back in 2008 for her baby Sunday Rose. This doula thing has been a trend a lot longer than in just the past few years. She said the doula helped everything go smoothly. "I'd heard horror stories of 40 hours of labor," she said, "and I was sure that would be me. But I had a very easy labor." Good for her.
Mila Kunis
For the birth of her daughter, Wyatt, Mila planned to have things be as natural as possible. No epidural, doula, and all. "We thought about it. We watched a couple of documentaries … and spoke to my OB/GYN and realized that the hospital that I'm going to be laboring in does a midwife, you know, doula type of thing, and so I'm gonna do it as all natural as I possibly can unless there's an emergency or something that should go wrong," Mila said at the time.
