The 10 Best Mystery Shows for Moms Who Love ‘Only Murders in the Building’ and Need More

Puzzles are so satisfying to solve because you feel a sense of accomplishment once you complete one. Mystery stories are similar in nature. You just feel so superior when watching a movie or television show and predicting who committed the crime.

Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building is a great show to watch because it lets you get involved in a murder mystery but isn’t too gory. It is a cozy, fun ride. The Afterparty

This AppleTV+ is the brainchild of Christopher Miller. Each season centers around solving a murder by reliving the events that lead up to it through the eyes of the supporting characters. In the first season the murder takes place at the afterparty of a high school reunion. In the second season the murder takes place after a wedding. Sadly there is not a third season. Tiffany Haddish stars as Detective Danner. The main cast is rounded out by Sam Richardson as Aniq Adjaye and Zoë Chao as Zoë Zhu.

Castle

This ABC series ran for eight seasons and can be streamed on Hulu and Disney+. The premise of this show centers around Richard Castle, a mystery novelist, who is facing major writer's block. After he is brought in for questioning for a copycat murder based on his books he meets Detective Kate Beckett and is inspired to write again. He decides to shadow her and model a character after her, something she is not pleased with. Over the course of working together, the two discover their different personalities might just balance each other out and be more than a friendship. Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic star.

Poker Face

Knives Out’s Rian Johnson created this Peacock series. It stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale. She has the ability to tell if someone is lying and works in a casino. She is forced to go on the run after a suspicious death in the workplace. While hiding out, she travels the country and solves murders along the way.

Murderville

This Netflix offering is based on the British television show Murder in Successville. It has a different guest star every episode who plays the rookie cop and is not given a script. They have to make it up as they go and try to solve the case. They are aided by the character of Terry Seattle, the bumbling senior detective played by Will Arnett, and his estranged wife Rhonda Jenkins-Seattle, the chief of police played by Haneefah Wood.

Based on a True Story

Much like Only Murders, this Peacock series pokes fun at the popularity of the true crime podcast. Ava and Nathan Bartlett, played by Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina, believe their plumber is the serial killer known as the "Westside Ripper." Instead of turning him in, they start a podcast. Second two is set to come out on November 21, 2024.

Pie in the Sky

Harry Potter fans will recognize the lead actor of this British series. Richard Griffiths, who played Vernon Dursley, stars as DI Henry Crabbe. This police detective wants to retire from the force and focus on being a chef but keeps getting roped back into cases. He splits his time between his wife's restaurant and solving mysteries. You can stream this on Sling TV.

Psych

This USA Network dramedy ran for eight seasons and was created by Steve Franks. The action centers around Shawn Spencer, a fake psychic with a photographic memory played by James Roday. His best friend Burton "Gus" Guster, played by Dulé Hill, reluctantly works with him to help the Santa Barbara Police Department fight crime. If you like the series there are also three movies. You can stream it all on Peacock.

Father Brown

This British detective series also features another Harry Potter favorite, Arthur Weasley himself, Mark Williams. In this series Mark plays the title character Father Brown, a priest at St Mary's Catholic Church after World War II who helps solve murders. It is based on G. K. Chesterton’s short stories and has been going strong for 12 seasons. You can stream it on Amazon Prime.

Monk

This series once complimented Psych as the two ran on the same night on the USA Network, one right after another. Monk tells the story of Adrian Monk, a detective who struggled with obsessive–compulsive disorder and a multitude of debilitating phobias. With the help of his assistants Sarona Fleming and Natalie Teeger, he helps the San Francisco Police Department solve hard cases. Doc Martin

This British medical series may seem like a wildcard choice but hear us out. Medical alignments are often as mysterious as murders and with Doctor Martin Clunes on the case, people recover the majority of the time. Martin, played by Martin Clunes, was once a renowned vascular surgeon at Imperial College London until he developed haemophobia. Because of this he takes a job as a general practitioner in the small town of Portwenn. Watch him struggle to adjust to the slower lifestyle and quirky locals on Amazon Prime with the Acorn TV add on.
