Model Ashley Graham has only been a new mom for a little over a month now, but she's already so relatable to all of us mothers out there. She gave birth to her first child, a little boy named Isaac, on January 18, 2020. Ever since, she's been totally nailing mom life — or at least just keeping it real when she's not crushing it.
One of the biggest things Ashley's done since giving birth is try to normalize breastfeeding, pumping breast milk, etc. — including in public or on the go. There's unfortunately still a lot of shame and controversy around feeding our babies naturally, but she's having none of it. The world could use more inspirational moms like her. Here are 20 times Ashley made new-mom life relatable AF.
Instant mom mode
Baby hands are just about the cutest things on the planet, and Ashley went into instant mom mode capturing Isaac’s tiny fingers for posterity in her first Instagram photo of him. Moms know there’s really no limit to the amount of photos we can take of our babies gently holding onto our fingers with their whole small hand. It’s so precious.
Normalizing breastfeeding
The first family photo Ashley posted to her Instagram after Isaac’s birth was so sweet. She and her husband stared down lovingly at their son as Ashley nursed him. It’s easy for celebrities to post super glam shots of themselves with their kids, but we love that this is just such an easy, simple photo. She’s just doing what comes naturally to her as a mom: feeding her son.
Birth story realness
On her podcast Pretty Big Deal, Ashley had her husband on as a guest and the two of them talked about her birth experience. They had baby Isaac at home and it was a really intimate, special moment for the two of them. Ashley even teared up while describing it. Giving birth is an extremely emotional experience, and every mom can relate with Ashley’s tears about the beauty of it all.
Getting real about postpartum care
“Raise your hand if you didn’t know you’d be changing your own diapers too,” Ashley Graham captioned this picture of her wearing disposable underwear. What moms go through after having a baby isn’t always talked about, but Ashley was intent on demystifying it and normalizing it for her followers. “No one talks about the recovery and healing (yes even the messy parts) new moms go through. I wanted to show you guys that it’s not all rainbows and butterflies!” she wrote.
Pumping in an Uber
New moms know that a girl’s gotta pump when a girl’s gotta pump. Ashley found that out the hard way when she was in the back of an Uber. But she didn’t let that bother her — she simply pumped away anyway and then posted the experience to Instagram. “Use to answer emails on my uber rides, now I pump before my breasts explode,” she captioned the video.
Date night with a third wheel
Baby makes three! Ashley and her husband, Justin Ervin, have to make room for their young son on their date nights, unless he’s staying with a sitter. They don’t seem to mind, though. They’re all dressed up, and Isaac is strapped to his dad’s chest. “He LOVES being on the baby wrap on daddy,” Ashley commented on this photo.
Securing the bag
In this video that Ashley posted to her Instagram Story, Justin had little Isaac strapped to his chest while Ashley carried something equally important: the baby bag. This particular one looks like the Beis Stroller Caddy, with plenty of pockets for all of baby’s essential items. Ashley is making diaper bags the new fashion statement.
Stretch mark realness
Ashley has made a whole career of loving the body that she’s in, and that hasn’t changed since she gave birth. A month after having her son, she posted a photo to Instagram showing off her stomach stretch marks. “Same me. Few new stories,” she wrote alongside the picture. She also posted it to her Instagram Story and filled the stretch marks in with glitter to show them off. Way to embrace what we all have!
Public breastfeeding
In her few weeks of being a mom, Ashley’s already made it very clear that she is not ashamed of breastfeeding — nor should she be! It’s a very natural thing, and people who disapprove need to get over themselves. Ashley posted this one for all the haters: Ashley and her son sharing a beverage. She had a coffee, and her son had milk.
Perfectly normal.
In awe of motherhood
When Ashley brought little Isaac on her podcast, the delight in her face was so real. She’s gone full mom mode on us. “He’s so little,” she cooed, adding, “I don’t know about you but I can’t stop staring at him.” Girl, we have been there. She later tweeted an still image from the video and captioned it, “Doesn’t get better than this.”
Multitasking mama
“Multitasking Sunday,” Ashley captioned this photo. It shows her checking her phone in bed while breastfeeding little Isaac. This is the epitome of #momlife right here, especially in the early days. Our little ones always seem hungry, but life also doesn’t stop so we can feed them. That’s how we all become excellent multitaskers.
Using her feet as hands
Talk about multitasking! Ashley is doing so much in one video here that she uploaded to Instagram Stories. She’s pumping breast milk, she’s drinking coffee, and she’s bouncing little Isaac in his rocker with her foot. Moms know they have to make do with what they’ve got, and feet can come in real handy when there just aren’t enough hands.
Normalizing pumping
Just like she frequently posts photos of her breastfeeding, the model is also normalizing pumping one photo at a time. She’s not the first celebrity to do so — Rachel McAdams even posed for a high-fashion magazine shoot while wearing a breast pumping machine — but with every celebrity who makes it seem like no big deal, we get closer to society truly believing us.
Baby naps
“Isaac loves naps on Mama,” Ashley captioned this photo. It’s funny how us moms just become beds for newborns who can conk out at any minute without warning. When they do fall asleep, we don’t want to move, in case we wake them up. But, honestly, it’s hard to mind when they look so freaking cute snoozing away.
Baby content consumption 24/7
While Isaac napped away on his mom’s chest, Ashley posted that she couldn’t stop watching the new Netflix show Babies. It’s a six-episode docuseries about the first year of infants’ lives from how they eat, sleep, and process the world around them. Most moms can relate with being totally baby-obsessed after giving birth and just wanting to consume all the information.
Operation nursing bra
Before someone has kids, they may take to Instagram to ask for food or travel recommendations. Or maybe makeup, hair, or clothing suggestions. But after having a baby, it’s all about mom questions. Ashley is the same, taking to her Instagram Stories to ask her followers for nursing bra advice. Hope she got some good tips!
Snuggled up
We can’t see little Isaac’s face in this Instagram Story, but we can see how much Ashley loves her little one. Her arm is nestled around him so protectively, and he’s cuddled up right next to her. These moments with a newborn are some of the most magical, and it’s really fun that Ashley is letting all of us see them, too.
Breastfeeding on camera
When Ashley had Isaac on her podcast, he got a little hungry during filming. No matter — Ashley breastfed him right there. She didn’t even mention anything about it, because it didn’t warrant a mention. It’s perfectly natural that her son would be hungry and she would feed him. We cannot overstate how cool it is that Ashley is being this open to her audience so they can see how normal breastfeeding is.
#Momlife
“My new morning look,” Ashley wrote on Instagram alongside her bedhead selfie. “#MomLife.” Ah yes, the struggle is so real. Most nights, new moms don’t get a ton of sleep and they also don’t have much time to do their hair and makeup. Not even being a celeb has saved Ashley from the reality of waking up like this. But, hey, we make it look good.
Diaper blowout ... in public
At some point, moms on the go with their little ones are going to have to change baby’s diaper … and it might have to be sooner than later. Sometimes in plain sight.
“[Expletive] just got real! First diaper blow up while running errands with no restroom in sight!” the new mom wrote in this hilarious Instagram post. “Thank God I remembered to put the changing mat in the diaper bag!!!”
