Amy Schumer Reveals the Relatable Reason She Let Her Doula Go After Giving Birth

On Wednesday, comedian Amy Schumer appeared on actor Penn Badgley's Stitcher podcast, Podcrushed. During their chat, Amy opened up about why she decided to fire her doula, Domino Kirke, immediately following the birth of her son, Gene. The topic was likely especially interesting for Penn, who happens to be married to Domino!

Domino helped Amy throughout her pregnancy

The You star's wife was hired by Amy, who suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, to help her navigate her complicated pregnancy. Amy gave birth to her son — whom she shares with husband Chris Fischer — in May 2019. Although Domino was there for Amy through thick and thin for nine months, Amy ultimately let her go shortly after Gene's birth.

Amy felt bad for having to fire Penn's wife

"The truth was — and this is pretty unfair to [Domino] — after I had Gene, I was recovering from a C-section," Amy explained to Penn. "Domino is like a goddess. She's an actual floating siren around the house. And she's just so lovely, and when she touches you, you just kind of melt. She was really a family member."

Amy admitted she was uncomfortable having Domino around

Amy blamed her own vulnerability for her decision to let Domino go. "I was like, I can't have this Botticelli goddess floating around my home when I am, like, bleeding out," she recalled. "I just didn't have the strength to allow myself the luxury of having her around our home. I was like, 'I think you can't come anymore.'"

There doesn't seem to be any hard feelings between Amy and the Badgley family

Penn didn't sound too hung up on Domino's firing while they were chatting — Amy even went on to hilariously read an entry from her middle school diary for the actor — so it seems like everything worked out in the end between Amy and Domino. Considering Domino works with pregnant women for a living, we're sure she's used to navigating tricky emotional situations.

It's been three years since Amy gave birth

Amy has been very open about her journey from pregnancy to raising a young child with her husband, who has been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. We're not surprised she was so candid with Penn about why she let Domino go, but we hope she continues to be honest about the parenting struggles she faces — we find them so relatable!
