You'll need the following supplies:

  • balloons
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 cups water
  • newspaper
  • craft glue
  • tissue paper and/or crepe paper streamers
  • craft knife
  • wire (to hang the piñata)

Create the structure

Blow up the balloon and tie it closed. Tear or cut the newspaper into strips, about two inches wide by 10 inches long. Make a paste by mixing the flour with the water in a wide container. Dip the newspaper strips in the paste and place the moistened strips onto the balloon, overlapping them until the balloon is completely covered.

The messy part

Keep placing strips on the balloon and make sure to cover it all, at least three layers to help make the piñata strong. This part is messy but the kids will love getting their hands dirty. To hold the balloon in place while applying the newspaper strips, place it on top of a plastic container such as a Tupperware that will act as a stable base.

Dry the structure

Let the piñata dry for at least 24 hours, making sure to rotate it so all sides dry. After it’s completely dry cut the end of the balloon or pop it with some scissors.

Apply a base and let the kids decorate!

To make it look nicer, apply one or two layers of white tissue paper before starting with the colored crepe and fringe so that newspaper won’t show underneath. Cut different colored tissue paper in strips and give the kids freedom to choose their colors and start adding stripes to the egg piñata with craft glue to cover the base layer. Make the strips shorter this time so it’s easier to apply stripes around the egg. They should be about five inches long each.

On the top and bottom of the egg, it will be easier to apply rectangles of paper instead of strips, so cut those additional pieces as needed and apply with glue.

Decorate with fringed tissue paper

Use scissors to make fringe with tissue paper strips. This can be a difficult task for small hands, so mom or dad should take control of the scissors for this step. Add craft glue to the top and place the fringe strips around the piñata, going from the bottom up. Keep adding the strips overlapping each other until you reach the top of the piñata. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding.

Cut the secret opening

Until now, the egg piñata is completely closed except for the little hole where the balloon knot was. Open a small flap on the top to one side with a craft knife. This will be the opening where you’ll add the candy. Pop the flap back into place to secure it. Add some additional crepe paper to cover the seams if necessary.

How to hang your piñata

Make two holes on the top to the opposite side of the flap with the craft knife. Thread a piece of wire down on one hole and take it out through the other hole, and tie it to make a handle.

A fun part of making Easter egg piñatas is that instead of one piñata to celebrate with, there can be two, three or even one for each child at your celebration because they’re small and they can be hung together in a string.
