A 600-pound Australian woman gave birth yesterday to what may be the world's largest baby, tipping the neonatal scales at 40 pounds. Mother and baby are doing well, according to reports.
Doctors at Perth's Kind Edward Memorial Hospital delivered the baby via c-section, after the woman's family brought her to the hospital. An ambulance was unable to accommodate the mom-to-be due to her size.
The doctor, who performed the surgical birth, said he has done countless c-sections but that he will remember this on in particular the rest of his life. He said he thought the woman was pregnant with twins or triplets. He never expected the woman's uterus housed only one baby.
The newborn is possibly the largest recorded baby in the world. The previous record hold was a South African baby, believed to have weighed 38 pounds when he was born in 1939, according to World News Daily Report. That whopper is said to have been of Zulu origin and grew to over 7 feet tall by the time he turned 18 years old.
