Excessive media viewing has been linked to everything from obesity to aggressive behavior, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Therefore, television should be limited for all children, regardless of age, says OB-GYN Kyoko Peña-Robles with One Medical Group in San Francisco, pointing to updated guidelines issued by the AAP in October 2013. The guidelines indicate that parents should discourage or eliminate screen time entirely for children who are younger than 2 years old, and limit screen time to one to two hours per day for children who are 3 or older. "Screen time includes televisions, computers and video games — and smart phones and tablets count, too," Peña-Robles says.
