Once your baby arrives, your schedule will be filled with feedings, burping, diapering, sleeping, repeat. After a while, though, you’ll start getting into a routine and find that you and the baby would appreciate some variety in the day. It’s easy to take your baby outside for walks, let them sit on a blanket in the sun, or take in the sights during a car ride.
However, if you have a winter baby and are concerned about social distancing, staying inside the house as much as possible is the safest option. The four walls of a home are limiting, so here are 11 ideas for keeping your baby entertained when you’re stuck inside.
1. Create stations around the room
Allowing your baby to crawl around touching and feeling different objects in each corner of the room is a fun way to allow the baby to explore and learn about the senses.
2. Explore the outside from the window
Talking to your baby has been known to increase their vocabulary and understanding of language. Have fun gazing out the window with your baby while you point out everything you see.
3. Get messy
Mealtimes can be a source of entertainment, too! When the baby is in their high chair, you can let them play with their food while they taste and touch, and inevitably make a huge mess of their meal. Starting baby-led weaning and being exposed to new foods can be an entertaining experience.
4. Fill a surprise basket
Head to the dollar store or find some inexpensive toys for your baby to discover when they are showing signs of boredom. A new toy will grant you some time to do something you need to get done while the baby has all eyes on their new toy.
5. Stretch and exercise
You are not the only one who may be interested in exercising and stretching your limbs throughout the day. You can find some stretching and exercise routines or create one that incorporates your baby in your workout. Stretch out baby’s legs and arms, giving their muscles a massage. A good stretch is especially great after a bath and before a nap!
6. Make some noise
Sing songs, make noises with your hands and mouth, or break out the pots and pans! You and your baby can start music class at any time and even record some of your jam sessions to share with family and friends.
7. Put baby in the bath
Bathtime is not reserved solely for before bed. A nice warm bath and a splash in the bubbles would be fun any time of day!
8. Have a little screen time
If you are OK with screen time at this age, singing along to a few YouTube videos or their favorite shows can be a bonding experience and allow you a few moments to take a break yourself.
9. Video calls with family and friends
Pick a new person to call each day and give them some face time! Undoubtedly everyone will want to see the baby, and with restrictions on visiting, video is a great way to spend plenty of time together.
10. Work out together
This workout is for you and baby! If you decide to get moving and once you’re cleared to exercise, try wearing the baby for some added weight. Watch your baby’s expressions while they bounce up and down to the workout.
11. Indoor ball pit
Using a tent or kiddie pool as an indoor ball pit is a simple way to create fun memories. Fill the space with plastic balls, and just have fun! Simple as that.
Whether you want to make memories and spend quality time with your baby or get some time to rest and relax while entertaining your baby, these activities should keep you busy at least until bedtime — and hopefully until the toddler stage.
