The amount of milk a nursing mother produces per day is roughly 30 ounces if she is breastfeeding exclusively, says Laurie MacLeod, certified nurse midwife in the department of OB-GYN at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center. “The amount can vary based on the frequency of feedings, the weight and caloric demand of the baby, and the baby's age,” says MacLeod. The amount of milk produced may also be increased when the nursing mother is both breastfeeding and pumping. The more milk is emptied from the breast, the more milk the body will produce to meet the demand.
