If breast milk is frozen and then thawed at room temperature or in the refrigerator, it should not be refrozen, according to Katrina Pinkerton, a New Haven-CT-based lactation consultant. However, if breast milk has been refrigerated since immediately after being expressed, it is less than 5 days old and the baby's mouth has not made contact with it, it is safe to freeze it to use at a later time, says Pinkerton. “The concern is bacteria level, and what type of bacteria would be present in the milk,” she says.
