Neither the application of sunscreen nor exposure to the sun is recommended for newborns, according to Dr. Charles I. Shubin, a pediatrician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. "Sunscreens have a variety of chemicals that can irritate the skin, and babies have sensitive skin," says Shubin. Babies up to 6 months of age should be dressed in protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat, Shubin advises. In addition to those measures, he says, they should be kept in the shade when outdoors.
