Can Carpet Irritate Crawling Babies?

Friction from crawling on carpeting can cause irritation of the hands, knees, tummies, legs, and feet, says pediatrician Jennifer A. Gardner of Washington, D.C. “In addition to physical irritations, chemicals in the carpeting or from professional cleaning with harsh detergents can cause irritation in children with sensitive skin,” says Gardner, founder of Healthy Kids Company. Avoid skin-to-carpet contact by arming your baby with socks, pants and long sleeves or move your child to tile or hardwood floors while he is learning to crawl.
