What is Switch Feeding?

The term “switch feeding" typically refers to the practice of moving baby between the breasts once or several times during the feeding session, notes Katrina Pinkerton, Connecticut-based lactation consultant. For example, a mom might nurse her baby on the left breast until the breast does not feel full or the baby begins to feed slower and then removes him from the left breast and puts him to the right. During switch feeding, mothers may switch back and forth between breasts several times, especially when trying to build up their milk supply, according to Pinkerton.
