If you are experiencing chapped nipples while breast-feeding, consult a pediatrician or other health care professional to help determine if your baby is having trouble latching, says Leigh Anne O’Connor, a New York City-based certified lactation consultant. “To soothe the chapped areas, a mom can apply her own milk, raw virgin coconut oil or gel pads,” says O’Connor, who also recommends simple plant-based ointments or creams that are safe for your baby to ingest.
