When a baby is crying in public, the best approach is for the parent to react in a calm manner, says pediatrician Charles Shubin, who practices at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. Babies are generally soothed by contact with an adult body and a calming voice. “If the parents are upset and anxious, the baby will be, too,” Shubin notes. Check that your baby is comfortable, well-fed and not in need of a diaper change to eliminate the fussing.
