Can My Baby Take Cold Medicine?

Babies should not take cold medicine, says Dr. Jeffrey Lazarus, California-based board certified pediatrician. Cold medicines have not been proven to be effective for babies and they have the potential for harmful side effects, such as rapid heart beat, says Lazarus. “If your baby is comfortable, there is no need to treat the cold,” he says. If congestion is getting in the way of your baby’s feedings, Lazarus recommends instilling a few saline nose drops in each nostril right before feeding to clear your infant's nasal passages.
