Does My Baby’s Digestive System Need to Adjust to Rice Cereal?

Most babies adjust well to rice cereal when it is introduced, typically between 4 and 6 months of age, says Dr. Jane Scott, Colorado-based pediatrician and neonatologist. If your baby experiences gas, dilute the cereal with more milk or formula, she says. “Occasionally, babies do better on another cereal or, in fact, may be better off trying a pureed vegetable as one of their first foods,” says Scott. If your baby seems to be experiencing constipation, loose bowels or tummy discomfort once rice cereal is introduced, consult your doctor for guidance.
