What to keep in mind for Halloween costumes

It’s our favorite time of fall, so bring on all the adorable baby Halloween costumes. But before committing to one, or a theme for the whole family, there are a few things to consider.

The fine line between appreciation and appropriation
If you aren’t familiar already, do a little research on cultural appropriation and how it can play into seemingly innocent Halloween costume choices. Most of the time, it’s not something anyone intends to do. However, it is harmful and disrespectful just the same.

“Examples of culturally appropriative Halloween costumes are — unfortunately — everywhere. Just look at your local Halloween stores advertising pre-packaged sets with names like ‘pow wow princess’ or ‘tequila shooter guy’ or ‘geisha lady,'” Elizabeth Scarbrough, professor in the Department of Philosophy at the College of Arts, Sciences & Education, shared with Florida International University. “These costumes trade on a feature of cultural appropriation — outsiders of a particular culture use the resources (e.g., traditional clothing or perceived traditional clothing) of a culture that is not their own.”

So when browsing for your baby’s costume, think carefully about whether or not you may be culturally appropriating.

Comfort is key
Depending on how old your baby is, you might be able to keep the costume design simple. Think about incorporating your theme by decorating the stroller or wagon instead.

“I’m not sure who thought it was a good idea to put so many frills and ruffles on a baby’s Halloween costume, but after dressing my 9-month-old as a princess this past year, I’ve learned one invaluable lesson — less is more,” mom of two Lauren T. shared with Mom.com. “Even if you don’t think it’s detachable, they will find a way to remove it, tear it, or have a full-on meltdown if they are unable to,”

Also, keep in mind that if by the end of trick-or-treating you know you’ll be carrying your little ghost or goblin, make sure their costume isn’t heavy or made with uncomfortable fabric.

Safety front and center
Sometimes accessories are what really make the outfit. But when it comes to your Halloween costumes, make sure those extras don’t take away from the overall safety of the costume. Tips to keep in mind:

  • Costumes should be bright and reflective
  • Make sure costumes are flame-retardant
  • If you’re using any type of facepaint, make sure it’s nontoxic. Test makeup beforehand on a patch of skin to make sure the child is not allergic to the makeup.
